The Wizard of Oz

The children sat spellbound as the M and M Production Company performed this great musical to the school. They were encouraged to join in with the singing and lots of 'he's behind you'......oh joy!

Height and length

This week we will be learning about length and height. Today we made multi link bridges to cross the river. We talked about how many blocks long and how many blocks high. We have also been measuring in paces in the playground and comparing lengths of natural objects.

Water balloon maths!

The children practiced their adding and subtracting skills using water balloons! The best bit was nobody got wet!

Odd and even numbers

Together the children and I looked at why an even number always has a partner.

Guinea pig maths

Poor Mr Nibbles is feeling poorly, so the children made him a guinea pig salad to make him feel better!

Vegetable faces - we are what we eat!

Class 1's trip to the Ultimate High

Class 1 had a great time at the low ropes! Together we went water sorbing rock climbing, rifle shooting, team building and we all went on the low ropes! The children were superstars and gave each other a lot of encouragement.

Class 6 on Exmoor

What a great day. Change of walk, Tar Steps instead of Dunkery due to very low cloud cover. Wouldn't have seen a thing! The children were our experts about wildlife on Exmoor because of their research. We saw Exmoor ponies, pheasants, fungi, gorse, heather, a kestrel, a pippit and other local species. The children thoroughly enjoyed the walk and many said they would like to come to the area again with their family. We live in such a beautiful part of the UK.

Y6 vegetation and wildlife sampling

Preparing for Exmoor tomorrow, we have made sampling quadrants to quantify plants and animals in 4 locations on Dunkery. Whilst making our quadrants, a few of the boys found this beautiful beetle. Can anyone identify it for us? It had blue highlights on the side of its body.

Y6 trip to Westward Ho!

What a wonderful day, the weather could not have been better. We walked to Westward Ho, discussing land use and human impact on the landscape. We looked at the rock formation of the cliffs and areas of erosion. The rock pooling bought up many questions about how animals and plants  adapt to their environment. After paddling in the sea we began the long walk home. The children were great to walk with especially as some had never walked for that distance before. I suspect the children will sleep well this evening. Thank you for such a good day and special thanks to Mr and Mrs M and Mrs M who accompanied us.

The Outside Space Development

Over the summer the steps leading up to the outside space have been created and a beautiful bridge has been built. A fence has been erected around the KS1 playground. The children love it.

Class 6 Creating the seashore environment

In preparation for our trip tomorrow, we discussed what we already know about the seashore environment and using this as a basis we created the seashore from sea to wall of Westward Ho! The children created rock pools, rock formations, sea defences, shallow and deep areas of the sea, plants and animals of the seashore etc. They told me about erosion, deposition and tectonic plates. They worked out that there would be a greater range of living things nearer the sea and less in the splash zone. We decided our first science investigation should be to rub different rocks together to recreate the action of the sea and see what they produce.
